Road Safety Worldwide Issue

Road Safety – a worldwide issue

Transport for Greater Manchester’s international relations continued when a group from Nigeria visited the Joint Road Safety Group to see what road safety in the UK looks like.

The group, consisting of six children (along with six accompanying adults), were winners of the 2011 Be Road Friendly competition which is aimed at promoting road traffic safety amongst children in Lagos, Nigeria, and is sponsored by the Lagos State Government.

The Be Road Friendly competition is a component of the Lagos State School Traffic Safety Advocacy’s Program initiated by Lagos State Traffic Management Authority to impart good road usage and traffic safety in children.

The competition winners visited TfGM’s Joint Road Safety Group to see how the transport system and road safety practices work in a developed country.

Karen Delaney, Communications Officer for the Joint Rd Safety Group, who delivered a presentation to the group said: “The aim of the visit was to show the children, in detail, transport systems, traffic management and road safety techniques in Greater Manchester. “It is hoped that the visit will further enhance and develop traffic safety programs, and to transform Lagos which is an emerging city, aiming for world class status.”
