With 9 collisions in the last 10 months at the same location on Glossop Road, Marple Bridge; DRIVESAFE and Stockport Council inform the press and public - each incident was a result of local motorists going too fast!
Councillors, Engineers & Road Safety Officers from Stockport Council all gathered on Glossop Road, Marple, to mark the start of the latest rebuilding work on a stretch of wall and fencing that has already been rebuilt several times in the last year.
On almost every occasion, the wall has been knocked down due to vehicles losing control and colliding with it, with some vehicles landing in the farmer's field on the other side.
New signs have been made by Stockport Council & DRIVESAFE to inform to public of why their journey is being held up and asking them to bear this matter in mind when they use the road in future.
David Hill, owner of the farm land adjacent to the wall, says; 'Hardly a month goes by without there being an incident where a vehicle crashes into the wall and often ends up in my field. So far, we have been lucky that no one has been seriously injured, but if motorists don't start slowing down here, someone probably will be killed.'
Claire Wightman, Communications Manager at DRIVESAFE claims; 'Very often it is perceived that it is the motorist who does not know a particular road very well who will be most likely to cause a collision. However the information gathered from this site, shows that all the collisions that have happened here within the last year have involved local people. These are people who believed they knew the road well enough to put their foot down as they passed along it.
For the foreseeable future, we are arranging an increase in speed enforcement at this site. Motorists can expect to see the DRIVESAFE vans on Glossop Road and will be served with points on their licence if they still choose to ignore the warnings.
The maximum speed limit on this road is 40mph, but as with any road hazard, drivers would be advised to negotiate the bends at a reduced speed. If everyone drove in a responsible manner on Glossop Road, these accidents could be prevented.'
Councillor Dave Goddard, Executive Member for Transportation added; 'We at Stockport Council have tried everything to slow motorists down, including new surfacing on the road and additional signage and white lining, but still the crashes are happening. We hope that by spelling out how many incidents there have been at this location we will make local drivers aware of the dangers of travelling too fast!
As an Authority we are doing all we can to prevent any further collisions, or worse still - a death, we ask that motorists using this road play their part and take responsibility for their actions 'SLOW DOWN!'
