Throughout April, the Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership is running an awareness and enforcement campaign aimed at people who use their mobile phone whilst driving.
The fundamental aims of this campaign are to remind drivers of the increased penalties that were introduced on February 27th 2007 and where appropriate issue with a fixed penalty ticket, which will render them liable to a £60 fine and 3 points on their licence.

In addition to the ten Local Authority teams, Greater Manchester Police, and Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency are adding their weight to the campaign by introducing a major new initiative, which will see police forces across the North West Region – including Derbyshire – passing information to the Traffic Commissioner, Beverley Bell, regarding enforcement action taken against drivers of Lorries (LGV) and Buses (PCV) for illegal use of mobile phones.

The initiative will allow the Traffic Commissioner, to consider use of regulatory powers to suspend or revoke drivers’ vocational (LGV / PCV) licences – potentially leaving drivers unable to work.
