Inattention is the 4th highest causation factor of collisions in Greater Manchester. In a bid to target this problem, we created a trolley key ring & gave it out to nursery schools for parents to pick up at the dropped off & collected their children. The simple design is intended to remind parents to keep their mind focused on the road and not let their eyes be swayed by distractions.
Similarly, our Partners at GMP informed us that there is a problem with pet owners not being aware of their legal responsibilities of transporting their pets in cages.
IS EVERYBODY SITTING COMFORTABLY?
It's not just humans that need to ensure they are wearing the correct restraints when travelling in vehicles. Animals need to be kept safe to.
In a crash, an unrestrained pet could seriously injure people in the vehicle. At 30mph, a 50lb (22.5kg) dog approximately the size of a border collie would be thrown forward with a force equivalent to almost nine 12 stone men.
Following a crash an unrestrained pet could escape and be hit by another vehicle and cause another collision. A frightened dog may attack strangers who are trying to help.
Unrestrained pets can also distract the driver, and cause an accident. Pets that are normally well behaved can be frighten by something unusual and dive for the drivers feet or lap.
DRIVESAFE have highlighted this issue with a colourful poster that we have distributed throughout Greater Manchester to Vets, Pet shops, grooming parlors and dog and cat homes.
DRIVESAFE wants the message to get across to people so that they ensure that their pet is safely secured in a seatbelt harness, a pet carrier, a dog crate or behind a dog guard. The most suitable restraint will depend on the needs of your pet.
This poster was sent out to every pet shop in Greater Manchester.
