SPECIAL ROAD SAFETY THANKS GIVEN TO GREATER MANCHESTER MUMS

Hundreds of school children in Reception classes across Greater Manchester are taking part in DRIVESAFE's latest campaign, by giving a special road safety message to their Mothers or carers just in time for Mother's Day.

The scheme, which is being rolled out in all boroughs across Greater Manchester is DRIVESAFE's latest attempt at reminding parents, carers and guardians about how important it is to use correct restraints on their children whilst transporting them around in cars.

DRIVESAFE have supplied every primary school in the county with Mother's Day cards, which are to be coloured in by their reception children and then given to their carer as a token for Mothering Sunday. The message inside the card reads; ‘To Mummy. Thanks for always making sure I am strapped safely in the car. Happy Mothers Day Lots of Love x'.

However, this clever campaign is dual pronged, as it is also educating the children themselves on why restraints are so vital. This important lesson is being delivered to each child via specially produced glossy road safety book for them to keep called ‘Teddy Takes a Tumble'.
The storyline in the book being given out briefly explains to the children what happened to a little boy's teddy bear when he forgot to strap it into his Mum's car safely. When the boy's Mum had to apply the brakes suddenly, the bear fell forward and hurt himself.

The Mother's Day cards compliment these books with a picture on the front of the card of the same teddy strapped into his car seat correctly. The pictures have been left blank by DRIVESAFE to allow the child to personalise it by colouring it in before they give it to their mum or carer.

Karen Delaney, Communications Manager at DRIVESAFE states; ‘This initiative is the first of it's kind in Greater Manchester and it seems to have been accepted well by all primary schools. Teachers have feedback to us that they have found the cards and books a valuable resource for delivering road safety lessons.

The children all love the Teddy Takes a Tumble books and it seems that the key message of the story really makes them aware of why they must stay strapped in safely. Once aware of the reasoning behind the restraint rule, we have found that many children are keen to remind adults of why it is important that they strap themselves in whilst driving or riding in a car.'
