Greater Manchester’s Drivesafe initiative is urging all holidaymakers to be sensible when drinking on holiday flights this summer. Travellers passing through Manchester airport will notice a high profile poster campaign entitled ‘Beers on a Plane’, which is highlighting a risk that is often overlooked. Drivesafe’s Communications Manager Karen Delaney explains;-

“When you are still in ‘holiday mode’ and there is little else to do on the plane, it is all too easy to drink alcohol and forget that you still have to drive home when you leave the airport. This can easily cause you to be over the legal limit. Tiredness and the dehydrating effect of on-board air conditioning will only make things worse. We are not saying that nobody should drink alcohol, just designate a driver before you travel, as you would for a night out at home“.

A second poster in the campaign series focuses on foreigners travelling to the U.K. who may not be aware of our seatbelt laws, Karen Delaney continues;-

“No two countries have identical road traffic laws and we need to ensure that visitors who travel in any vehicle here – whether it is a taxi, hire car or a pick-up by a friend - know their obligations on our roads. The wearing of seatbelts by all drivers and passengers is compulsory and for good reason“.

The ‘Seatbelts on a Plane’ poster is also a gentle reminder for holiday-makers returning home, after possibly getting used to more relaxed rules abroad and cruising along quiet, sunny roads where seatbelts remain unused.
